The Tiradentes University, among its spaces for the preservation and preservation of local memory, includes the Tobias Barreto Institute of Education and Culture, created by the journalist Luiz Antonio Barreto. The ITBEC, as it is recognized, is located on the 2nd floor of the Jacinto Uchoa de Mendonça Central Library building, at the Farolândia Campus. The collection includes books, magazines, photos, postcards, documents, leaflets, manuscripts, Sergipan voices, among others, including the Tobias Barreto Memorial, gathering books of and about the patron, original texts, photographs and paintings, is open to students, teachers and local researchers. The collection of ITBEC has also served researchers from all over Brazil, since its collection includes themes that extrapolate the history and culture of Sergipe, having significant works of history and national and international culture and Latin American folklore. With it, UNIT depoists its mission and the idea of its founder Professor Jouberto Uchôa de Mendonça in that it discloses figures and facts that compose the history, because “One does not love what one does not know.”
GUARD AND PRESERVATION OF THE COLLECTION
Among the projects that are developed by the Institute are:
ORGANIZATION AND EXHIBITION OF THE COLLECTION OF THE CULTURAL UNIT OF THE TOBIAS BARRETO INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION AND CULTURE
- The purpose of the project is to disseminate the collection currently protected by Tiradentes University. The collection consists of books of History, Law, Literature, Folklore, Religion, Philosophy and others of Sergipe, Brazil and other Latin American countries, as well as a significant number of periodicals (magazines, notebooks, annals, Bulletins), as well as audiovisual resources (tapes, CDs, DVDs, discs, etc.). It is also important to highlight a quantitative and expressive collection of photographs of personalities and the socio-cultural, economic and urban context of Sergipe.
SCANNING AND CATALOGING OF PHOTOGRAPHS
- The project aims to digitize and organize the photographic collection (about 40,000 images) with a view to developing a photographic catalog that will be made available to researchers and other interested parties. There is in this sense a subproject entitled “Sixths of Remembrance” that aims to bring together people with greater knowledge of the memory and history of Sergipe to identify images that are without proper reference. This subproject is still being organized, but its purpose is to gather people every last Friday of the month at the Institute’s headquarters in order to identify them.
EXHIBITIONS
The project aims to celebrate names, institutions and objects that composed the History of Sergipe and Brazil. The idea is to make biannual exhibitions that commemorate centennial celebrations of Sergipe personalities and / or institutions, as well as highlighting some of the precious things that the Institute contains. In this sense the exhibitions have already been produced:

PRIZE LUIZ ANTONIO BARRETO DE MONOGRAFIAS
The project aims to: Focus and value the student’s role as one who seeks scientific quality in the learning process; To stimulate, among students, professional and humanistic training, scientific production, participation in the academic life of the University, contributing to the production of knowledge and valuing interdisciplinary research from the generating theme, arousing scientific thinking in the university community, through Research and production of knowledge.
RE-EDITING RARE WORKS
The aim of the project is to reprint classic works of Sergipe historiography. 5 – PROMOTING, ENCOURAGING, FOSTERING, FOLLOWING … The purpose of the project is to participate in the calls for funding to increase the ITBEC collection, since it is composed of a diversified collection and, for example, there are some books that need restoration, sanitization and disinfestation.

A Universidade Tiradentes dentre seus espaços destinados a guarda e preservação da memória local contempla o Instituto Tobias Barreto de Educação e Cultura, criado pelo jornalista Luiz Antonio Barreto. O ITBEC, como é reconhecido, está sediado no 2º andar do edifício da Biblioteca Central Jacinto Uchoa de Mendonça, no Campus Farolândia. O acervo que contempla livros, revistas, fotos, cartões postais, documentos, folhetos de cordel, manuscritos, vozes sergipanas, dentre outros, o que inclui o Memorial Tobias Barreto, reunindo livros de e sobre o patrono, originais de textos, fotografias e pinturas, é aberto a estudantes, professores e pesquisadores locais. O acervo do ITBEC também tem servido a pesquisadores de todo o Brasil, pois seu acervo congrega temáticas que extrapolam a história e cultura sergipanas, tendo significativas obras da história e da cultura nacional e internacional e do folclore lationoamericano. Com ele a UNIT sedimenta sua missão e a ideia de seu fundador Professor Jouberto Uchôa de Mendonça na medida em que divulga personagens e fatos que compõem a história, pois “Não se ama aquilo que não se conhece.”
GUARDA E PRESERVAÇÃO DO ACERVO
Dentre os projetos que são desenvolvidos pelo Instituto estão:
ORGANIZAÇÃO E EXPOSIÇÃO DO ACERVO DA UNIDADE CULTURAL DO INSTITUTO TOBIAS BARRETO DE EDUCAÇÃO E CULTURA
- O projeto tem por objetivo divulgar o acervo hoje resguardado pela Universidade Tiradentes. O acervo é constituído de livros de História, Direito, Literatura, Folclore, Religião, Filosofia e outros de Sergipe, do Brasil e de outros países latino americanos, bem como um significativo número de periódicos (revistas, cadernos, anais, anuários, indicadores, boletins), além de recursos audiovisuais (fitas, cd’s, dvd’s, discos, etc.). É importante destacarmos também um quantitativo e expressivo acervo de fotografias de personalidades e de contexto sociocultural, econômico e urbanista de Sergipe.
DIGITALIZAÇÃO E CATALOGAÇÃO DAS FOTOGRAFIAS
- O projeto tem por objetivo digitalizar e organizar o acervo fotográfico (cerca de 40.000 imagens) com vistas a elaborar um catálogo fotográfico que será disponibilizado para pesquisadores e demais interessados. Há nesse sentido um subprojeto intitulado “Sextas da lembrança” que tem por objetivo reunir pessoas com maior conhecimento da memória e história de Sergipe para identificar imagens que estão sem a devida referência. Este subprojeto ainda está sendo organizado, mas tem como propósito reunir pessoas a cada última sexta-feira do mês na sede do Instituto afim de que ocorra identificação.
EXPOSIÇÕES
O projeto tem como objetivo festejar nomes, instituições e objetos que compuseram a História de Sergipe e do Brasil. A ideia é fazer semestralmente exposições temáticas que aluda comemorações dos centenários de personalidades e/ou instituições sergipanas, bem como que ressalte algumas das preciosidades que o Instituto contem. Nesse sentido já foram produzidas as exposições:

3.AS MOEDAS CONTAM UMA HISTÓRIA
PRÊMIO LUIZ ANTONIO BARRETO DE MONOGRAFIAS
O projeto tem por objetivos: Focalizar e valorizar o papel do estudante como aquele que busca a qualidade científica no processo de aprendizagem; estimular, entre os estudantes, a formação profissional e humanística, a produção científica, a participação na vida acadêmica da Universidade, contribuindo para a produção do conhecimento e valorizar a pesquisa interdisciplinar a partir do tema gerador, despertando o pensamento científico na comunidade universitária, através da investigação e produção do conhecimento.
REEDIÇÃO DE OBRAS RARAS
O projeto tem por objetivo reeditar obras clássicas da historiografia sergipana. 5 – PROMOVER, INCENTIVAR, FOMENTAR, ACOMPANHAR…O projeto tem por objetivo participar em editais de órgãos de fomento a fim de captar recursos para incrementar o acervo do ITBEC, haja vista que este é composto por um acervo diversificado e que, por exemplo, há alguns livros que necessitam de restauro, higienização e desinfestação.
